The Young Girl was playing on the machines at Phil Jennings's amusement arcade in 1990 when councillor and concerned mother Deirdre Barlow went there to tear a strip off the management for letting children in. Unable to find the manager, Deirdre asked the girl if he was about, and was told that he'd gone out for lunch. As Deirdre prepared to wait for him, the girl finally turned away from the machine she was playing on to ask her if she had a light. Despite being a heavy smoker, Deirdre said no.
