Winston budgie

Winnie in his cage

Winnie was George Greenwood's blue budgie. George appropriated the bird when he flew into Oakenshaw Park on 24th January 1965 and followed George around. As the park's keeper, George put up a notice about the missing budgie and took him as his own pet when nobody turned up to claim him. George named the bird Winnie, after Winston Churchill who had died the day that Winnie first appeared.

Winnie was kept in George's workshed at the park. In 1968, George gave his friend Hilda Ogden a budgie called Mabel, who she decided to keep with Winnie.
