WPC Burrows accompanied social worker Christine Naden to 5 Crimea Street when Deirdre Rachid reported Jamie Armstrong had turned up at her flat having run away from his foster parents, the Digbys, the night before. He had been placed with them after his mother Tricia had been sentenced by the magistrates to a week in Styal Prison for non-payment of her TV licence.
Jamie had actually turned up at the flat the previous evening and Deirdre had reluctantly allowed him to stay the night, but when she found at the next morning from neighbour Roy Cropper that the police had been searching for the boy, she rang social services, ready to confess that she had delayedy before alerting them. The police officer and Christine dealt kindly with the lad, who was a wiley as ever when he butted into their questions to claim that he had spent the previous night in a garden shed, thus getting Deirdre out of any potential trouble. Jamie point-blank refused to go back to the Digbys, saying he didn't want to be with people he didn't know and pleaded to stay with Deirdre. He looked on the verge of tears and Deirdre, knowing him very well of old, assumed he was putting on one of his acts. It was enough to convince Christine that staying with Deirdre for a few days might be the best course open to them and, saying she would arrange it with her office, she and WPC Burrows left. Deirdre was surprised to find that Jamie really was upset and comforted him as he broke down in tears.
Burrows, together with her colleague PC Bowman was back at the flats in the October to speak to Tricia, now released, after she had been assaulted by her abusive husband Carl. During a visit to Strangeways Jail a few days earlier, Tricia told him that she wanted to finish with him but he ultimately snapped when he learned that she was pregnant with another man's child. Although the prison wardens were quick to restrain Carl, Tricia ended up with a black eye.
The officers were let into the property by Deirdre, who then called at Tricia's flat and tried to persuade her to press charges. Despite the police telling her that there were witnesses to the attack and Carl's sentence would be lengthened as a result of his actions, a visibly upset Tricia was adamant that she just wanted Carl out of her life and asked the officers to leave.
