Viv and her two friends Joyce and Beryl were three workers at Elliston's Raincoat Factory who were late for work one morning in November 1963 as Viv was in desperate need of some rollers for her straggled hair from the corner shop. Florrie Lindley hadn't yet opened up and Joyce and Beryl were keen not to be late again whereas Viv was more concerned about her "tatty string" hair, her mother having taken her own rollers that morning. As the final hooter was sounded, Beryl stopped smoking her cigarette and crossed the street, with Joyce offering to cut Viv's hair at lunchtime and make her look like a Beatle. Viv gave up waiting for the shop to open and joined them.
