Vincent was a friend of Jerry Booth and a fellow member of the Weatherfield Harriers cycling club. Jerry was shortly to be married to Myra Dickinson and asked Vincent to be his best man for the occasion, not being aware that his controlling bride-to-be had already earmarked Dennis Tanner for the task and without consulting her fiancé, she had approached Dennis, obtained his agreement and given him a list of tasks that he would have to carry out on the big day.

She was therefore taken aback when Jerry brought Vincent back to the street and introduced his choice. But Myra wasn't to take defeat in any form and tried every verbal trick she could to convince Vincent that he wouldn't like the role. Failing when she went through the list of responsibilities he would face, she instead moved on to Vincent's obvious fitness regime and pointed out that he would be spending some extended hours in the smoky atmosphere of the reception and then finding out that he was teetotal, she exaggerated how much he would have to drink when he was proposing the various toasts, saying it would put him out of condition for weeks, a point that alarmed Vincent as he had some impending time trials.

With Dennis in the room, Myra suggested him as an inspired idea for an alternative and, catching on, he accepted the offered role. She wasn't finished yet though and when Vincent mentioned being at the reception, she claimed in front of a hapless Jerry that they were keeping the numbers small and he wouldn't miss much as they were having a very small reception. She did express a hope that he would be at the church though and that she and the groom would keep an eye out for him and wave at him as they walked down the aisle. Thoroughly bewildered with the speed of her patter, Vincent could make no reply.

Vincent was played by Geoff Hinsliff, twenty-four years before he made his debut in the regular role of Don Brennan.
