Anthony John Melody (born 18th December 1922 in Marylebone, London; died 26th June 2008 in Bispham, Blackpool) appeared on Coronation Street in four roles:
- A Coach Proprietor in June 1965
- Ernie Bond, the taxi driver who drove the newly married David and Irma Barlow to their wedding reception in December of the same year
- Decorator Harold Eaton in February 1968
- The MC at a ballroom dancing competition held at Blackpool's Tower Ballroom in July 2000.
He also appeared in two episodes of the Street spin-off Pardon the Expression as an electrician.
Raised in Goole where his parents ran a public house, he developed a passion for singing as a small boy - often accompanying the pub's pianist and he later went onto perform with the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra. He served in the RAF during World War II and spent three years touring the Mediterranean as a dancer, entertaining British troops with Ralph Reader's Gang Show.
He was regularly heard on BBC Radio as Horatio Higginbottom, the grumpy taxi driver in the sitcom The Clitheroe Kid, in a role which lasted sixteen years.
His on-screen credits include Be Soon, Here's Harry, Just Jimmy, The Hole in the Wall, Rule Britannia!, The Nesbitts Are Coming, Bergerac, two seperate roles in Emmerdale Farm, Last of the Summer Wine, The Winning Streak, Jossy's Giants, Demob, Without Motive and a role in the 1979 blockbuster movie Yanks.
