The Queens, built in 1931, is a Newton & Ridley pub, regarded by many employees as one of the best houses in the chain.

In May 1993, Liz McDonald was appointed manager after the previous managers were sacked, and she moved into the living quarters with her husband Jim McDonald. However their tenure there would be short, after Jim punched her boss Richard Willmore, Liz initially continued running the pub alone, until her reconciliation with Jim a few months later, at which point she was sacked.

In 1993 the long standing staff of The Queens included cellar man Bob Cairns and barmaid Tanya Pooley.
