1962: Constable Rose finds the missing Christopher Hewitt's pram
The Croft was an area of waste ground at the bottom of Bessie Street in Weatherfield. In October 1962, after snatching two-month-old Christopher Hewitt from outside Gamma Garments in Rosamund Street, Joan Akers abandoned his pram at the Croft where it was later found by Constable Rose. Unfortunately, the pram contained no clues as to who might have taken Christopher, although he was returned home safe and sound by Joan after a chat with Elsie Tanner shortly thereafter.
A month later, Lucille Hewitt watched the annual bonfire at the Croft.
The Croft ran alongside Canal Street. In 1972, Jimmy Frazer suggested that Alan Howard rented a plot there to expand the Canal Garage.
