Susie Makepiece was the daughter of Alfred and Ivy Makepiece. Her family was the first to inhabit 11 Coronation Street after it was built in 1902. Susie was born in 1906 and was the youngest child of the Makepiece children.

Like many of her neighbours, Susie went on to work at Hardcastle's Mill. It was expected that she would marry and Ivy tried to push her towards George Diggins, landlord of the Rovers Return, but Susie ran off with Billy Chad from No.3 to London instead. She didn't return until one day in March 1929 when, dressed in a fur coat and with a gentleman in a bowler hat waiting for her in a car, she called at No.11, giving Ivy the shock of her life. Susie told her mother she'd found a wealthy friend in London and wanted to share in her good fortune. Ivy - who'd written her off as dead when she disappeared - called her a whore and threw her out.

Will first appeared in Daran Little and Bill Hill's "Weatherfield Life", published in 1992. Other information is derived from Little's follow-up book, "Around the Coronation Street Houses".
