Susan Elizabeth Jenkins was born in Liverpool on 31st July 1958, the oldest of two daughters born to a Liverpool Transport employee father, Albert and his mail order manageress wife Marjorie. Her younger sister is called Pam. Whilst studying at school, Sue took her first job working in a shop. At the age of seventeen, Sue made her television debut in Z Cars before appearing in pantomime in Pinocchio where she met actor David Fleeshman. She trained for three years at the Elliott Clarke Theatre School, Liverpool. After graduation Sue became an assistant stage manager at Chesterfield Civic Theatre. Sue has worked constantly since then in television, radio and theatre.

Her stage work includes Educating Rita, Having a Ball (a play specially written for her by Alan Bleasdale), Tom Jones, Twelfth Night, Othello, As You Like It, How the Other Half Loves, Absent Friends, The Devils, Sisterly Feelings, It's a Madhouse and School for Wives. On radio she has performed in Middlemarch, Villette and Wuthering Heights.

On television she has appeared on Wood and Walters, The Pyramid Game, Esther, Wheel of Fortune and How We Used to Live (as Charlotte Holroyd). Sue played Janey in the drama series The Beiderbecke Affair, Julie Ryan in Coasting and Mollie Mozelle in In Suspicious Circumstances. In 1985 she joined Coronation Street as barmaid Gloria Todd, and although initially only brought in for a few episodes, she was soon a favourite with the viewers and played the role for three years. She left the series in 1988, after the birth of her second child. In 1991 she returned to regular television when she took on the role of Jackie Corkhill in Brookside. Sue married David Fleeshman in 1978 and they have three children; Emily Victoria, Rosie Annabelle and Richard Jonathan.

In late 2006 she was a panelist on Loose Women and in 2008 she appeared in Emmerdale as Bonnie Drinkwater

The family live together in Cheshire.
