The Steward was stationed on a passenger ship which sailed into Manchester Docks in November 1962. Among the travellers were Linda, Ivan and Paul Cheveski, making their first return visit to Weatherfield since emigrating to Canada a year earlier.
As the boat arrived at its destination, Linda excitedly asked the steward when they'd be allowed to disembark. The steward joked that he'd taken her comment personally, before admitting that he used to feel the same way himself whenever he arrived home though it had worn off a bit now. Assuring Linda that it wouldn't be long, the steward told the couple not to worry about the baggage in their cabin as he would look after it. Linda was so pleased to be home that she didn't call him out on his mistake of addressing her as "Mrs Creshevski".
