Stephen Harold Halliwell (born 21st March 1946 in Bury, died 15th December 2023 in Leeds) appeared on Coronation Street in four roles:
- Council official Mr. Toft in January 1984
- Housing officer Paul Hindley, who planned to rehouse Percy Sugden in May 1988
- The returning officer who announced the results of the local election in May 1991
- Bob Cairns, the barman in The Queens pub, making intermittent appearances between May 1993 and January 1994.
An apprentice engineer, predominantly working in cotton and paper mills, he took up drama training at the Mountview Theatre School, London and was a founder member of the Interchange Theatre in Bury.
His other credits included roles in Crown Court, The Practice, Children's Ward, All Creatures Great and Small, Three Seven Eleven, Cracker and the 1987 film The Fourth Protocol, but will be best remembered as Zak Dingle in Emmerdale - a role he portrayed from 1994 until shortly prior to his death.
