He played parts in The Buccaneers and Space Precinct and appeared on the big screen in Braveheart in 1995. After more television roles in Out of the Blue and Jonathan Creek, he came to a wide public attention for his leading role as Lysander Hawkley in the raunchy adaptation of Jilly Cooper's The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous in 1997.
This brought him to the attention of Coronation Street's casting directors and he was cast as Les Battersby's illegitimate son, the villainous Greg Kelly. Stephen first appeared in the role in April 1998 and remained until January 1999, coming back for a further short stint in the May of the same year.
Since leaving the Street, he has gone on to appear in Relic Hunter, Inquisition and Doctors while on the big screen he has been in The Prophecy, Exitz and Apeth. He is also well known in his role of Danny Lomax in Hollyoaks, which he played from July 2013 until the character's death in August 2014.
He also now teaches acting at his old drama school and the Method Studio in London.
