Anglo-Indian actress Shelley King has played Yasmeen Metcalfe in Coronation Street since July 2014.
She was born on 25th September 1955 in Calcutta, India. She was educated at the La Martinere School for Girls. Inspired by her grandfather's readings of Shakespeare and the thrill of watching stage productions in England from an early age she joined the National Youth Theatre at fourteen. She trained at The Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1977. Her first role was a regular role in the BBC series Angels and she has also appeared in The Jewel in the Crown, See How they Run, Banglatown Banquet, Holby City, A Secret Slave, Tandoori Nights (two series on Channel 4), King of the Ghetto, Silent Witness, Casualty, EastEnders, South of the Border, Brookside and The Bill.
On the big screen she has appeared in Code 46 and All in Good Time while on stage her long list of credits includes Bombay Dreams (West End original cast), Hobson's Choice (Young Vic), Besharam (Soho Theatre), Free Outgoing (Royal Court), Behzti (Birmingham Rep), The Man of Mode, Women of Troy, Little Clay Cart Tartuffe (RNT), Calcutta Kosher (Kali Theatre/Stratford East), Orpheus, The Modern Husband, Ion (Actors Touring Company), Death and the Maiden (Wolsey Ipswich), The Innocent Mistress (Derby Playhouse), Danton's Death, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Heer Ranjha, Troilus and Cressida and many more for Tara Arts. She is proud to have been Chair of Kali Theatre and remains as a Board Member.
