Coronation Street Wiki

Sam Kingston was a builder and mechanic who performed as a stripper under the name of "The Masked Python".

Sam arrived in Coronation Street in 2000 when his uncle Pat Hegherty found him a job building the medical centre in Rosamund Street. After this, he stayed in the area, working at the Coronation Street Garage. In 2002, his relationship with Toyah Battersby fizzled out and after quitting his job at the garage, Sam left Weatherfield for Ibiza.

Sam was Pat Hegherty's nephew. He wangled him a job on the Medical Centre's building site in Rosamund Street but he landed in trouble when he took Jack Duckworth's advice and didn't put the workers money on a horse - that won. To pay the lads back he turned to his other role - stripping for women as The Masked Python.

Sam played a crucial part in Toyah Battersby's healing process from her rape ordeal. He helped her to be comfortable enough to have sexual relations again, letting her work through her trauma.

Sam was shown to be a kind and generous man. Throughout his relationship with Toyah, he helped her through acts of service, a helping hand in picking up Les Battersby through his difficulties after he and Janice got their divorce.

Background information[]

Five years before debuting as Sam in June 2000, Scott Wright played an uncredited extra in Coronation Street in 1995. The programme was his first credited acting job, although the part was originally only intended for seven episodes. The role was retained after a positive viewer reaction, which even earned Wright a nomination for Most Popular Newcomer at the National Television Awards in 2001. However, he lost out to EastEnders's Jessie Wallace.
