The Salvation Army lady and her colleagues in the accompanying band came playing and collecting, as they regularly did, on one Sunday morning in Coronation Street in June 1964. Charlie Moffitt's prized racing pigeon Sambo was due in having been set out on a race two days before, and Charlie was afraid that the sound of the brass band would scare his sensitive bird away. He therefore politely asked the lady to get the band to play elsewhere. An amused Len Fairclough suggested that Charlie should donate everything in one go that the lady would normally expect to collect on the street and then they would move on immediately to Viaduct Street. With a sigh, Charlie put 7/6 in her box, saying that he never knew when he would need the services of the Army. Pleased, she wished him "God bless" and moved on, making even more as she went as Minnie Caldwell insisted on making another donation as she progressed down the street.
