The Salesman worked at Johnson’s Bed Warehouse and served Rita Fairclough when she shopped for a new bed there prior to her move into 10a Coronation Street. Alf Roberts accompanied her, against the “warnings” of his jealous wife Audrey. To get round this problem, Alf span Corner Shop assistant Sally Webster a story that he was going to get a new bed as a surprise for Audrey and not to say anything but Sally had no choice but to blab when Audrey guessed where he was. She went to the warehouse, just as Alf and Rita were “trying” out one of the beds in a wholly innocent manner. Audrey played along with Alf’s ruse that the bed was for her and told the salesman to invoice them for the cost of their new bed - £650.00. Alf was somewhat dismayed…
