Pretty, well spoken Social Worker who turned Len Fairclough's head after moving into the Glad Tidings Mission Hall and transforming it into a Community centre. Initially offended by the idea of the transformation Ena Sharples resigned her post but when she chagned her mind Ruth allowed her to return to her job and home.
Despite this Ena was still suspicious of Ruth, even when she saw her attempt to help an ill Minnie Caldwell. When an event at the Community centre got out fo hand Ruth utilised her martial arts skills to save Ena and Lucille Hewitt who were being threatened by a pair of thugs. After the community centre closd Ruth finished with Len and left for Rome where her boyfriend worked as a stunt man in the movies.
