Roy Birch was a long-haired man who appeared at the Magistrates Court on an unspecified charge on the same day as Jerry Booth in 1971. Roy's woes were exacerbated by the fact that his father hadn't arrived to support him. While he waited anxiously in a corridor, Roy sat next to Jerry, who was managing to stay calm and composed. Jerry gave Roy a cigarette and reassured him by talking about his faith in the fairness of the British justice system.
