Ron Edwards was the referee at a bowls championship played one evening at the Weatherfield Bowling Green. The stakes were high. Pensioner Sam Tindall had been told by Phyllis Pearce that she would be his partner on the annual bowls trip to Southport if - and only if - he beat fellow competitor Percy Sugden. Percy himself knew nothing of this arrangement, not being at all interested in winning the hand of the lady.

When the match began, Percy got into an argument with Sam when he "followed the wood" by running across the manicured green with great lumbering steps. Ron had to step in and warn Sam not to slam his feet down so hard. Sam riled Percy by telling him of what stakes were involved and Percy, now fully aware of the danger he was in, began to deliberately throw the match but in the end his pride wouldn't let him lose. He won the match and had to leg it fast as Phyllis chased after him.

Credited as "Referee", the character was named in "TV Times".
