Richard Avery was born in Staffordshire and appeared in two minor roles on Coronation Street: in February 2000 he played a Magistrate who sentenced Les Battersby to one hundred and fifty hours of community service for benefit fraud and he reappeared in October and November 2002 as neurosurgeon Robert Orm who handled Sarah Platt's case after she was badly injured in a car crash.

He has also appeared on television in The Return of the Native, The Bill, Heartbeat and two roles in Emmerdale while on the stage his roles include parts in The Norman Conquests The Recruiting Officer The Glass Menagerie, Hamlet (as the Ghost and the Player King) and Harry in the national tour of Funny Peculiar. He has made several appearances at the Chichester Festival Theatre

He is married to actress Andrea Wray.
