Ray Thorpe was a decorator who struck up a relationship with Tricia Armstrong shortly after the birth of her son Brad. Jack Duckworth suspected that Ray and Tricia had known each other a while and that Ray might actually be Brad's father, rather than Jack's son Terry, as Tricia had claimed. Tricia vehemently refuted the accusation. When Terry returned to the area, unaware that he had a new son, Tricia dropped Ray in the hope of settling down with Terry. She soon realised that Terry had no interest in her and rekindled her romance with Ray. He invited her to move in with him, and Tricia left the area with Ray, Brad and her teenage son Jamie.
