Qatar is a country located in Western Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Its sole land border is with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. Backed by the world's third-largest natural gas reserves and oil reserves, the country and its 313,000 citizens has the highest per capita income in the world.

From January 1982, Brian Tilsley worked in Qatar for six months working for Ron Sykes and earning enough money to enable the two men to go into partnership and set up S & T Garage in Bridge Street. The trip therefore proved lucrative but his absence caused strains in his marriage to Gail Tilsley who was left behind to look after their infant son Nicky.
Gina Seddon's second husband, Donnie Buckley, moved to Qatar after their marriage broke up in the 2010s.
In January 2019, Gary Windass was tempted to go to the country for six months tax-free building work at the suggestion of his old army buddy Joe Haslam but their plans were overheard by a furious Sarah Platt and she warned her boyfriend to drop the idea completely or their relationship would be over.
