Prison Officer Barker worked at Highfield Prison where Nina Lucas came to visit her uncle Roy Cropper when he was remanded on custody in April 2024 awaiting his trail for the murder of Lauren Bolton. Totally innocent of the crime, and the subject of campaign of harassment by vigilantes after his first arrest was publicised, a shell-shocked Roy withdrew into himself, refusing food and visits.
With everyone else in the visiting room paired with someone, Nina sat alone for the hour until Mr Barker came to tell her that although her uncle was fine, he was refusing to leave his cell and there was nothing they could do. As the bell rang to signify the end of the visiting period, a desperately worried Nina asked the officer if there was anyone else she that could speak to as Roy's behaviour was out of character, but she was unable to gain any satisfaction.
Roy also refused food and some drink and almost a fortnight later collapsed in his cell from dehydration. On that day, Nina was again trying to see her uncle and waiting a considerable period of time in the visiting room, asked the officer to find out where he was. After initially rudely replying that he wasn't messaging service, Barker radioed through to the control area returned to tell Nina that she was best going to Weatherfield General to see her uncle as he couldn't give her any details about what had happened to him.
