The Prison Officer was on duty at Highfield Prison when Shona Ramsey visited her son Clayton Hibbs for the first time in eighteen months to inform him that his father Dane had died of a drugs overdose, something that Clayton was already aware of.

Their conversation was sarcastic and acrimonious as Clayton found the environment there to be far harsher than at Larchfield Young Offenders Institute where he had previously been held, and he claimed he was the subject of attacks from some of the other prisoners. His attitude got to Shona who stood up in anger, in contravention of the visiting rules, and she was firmly told to sit down or she would be removed.

Eight months later, he was on duty when David Platt was incarcerated for breaking the terms of a previous parole. Fellow inmate Abe Crowley was hiding a smuggled mobile phone up his sleeve and the officer demanded to search him. David had witnessed Abe being passed the phone by his gran that morning during a visit, and desperate to protect himself from any accusation of grassing up Abe, he created a momentary diversion to enable Abe to swiftly lose the phone to a passing prisoner before the search was resumed. The ruse bonded Abe with David who felt he was in debt to him.
