Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (10 June 1921 – 9 April 2021) was a member of the British Royal Family, and the husband of Queen Elizabeth II from 1947 to 2021. He and his wife were occasionally mentioned in Coronation Street, with Ena Sharples writing to the Duke in 1962 to protest against Coronation Street being renamed, which he helped out with.
In real life he and his wife visited the 1982 outdoor set upon its completion. His son Prince Charles visited the set in December 2000 as part of the show's 40th anniversary, with footage of the visit being implemented into the narrative. His grandson Prince William's wedding to Kate Middleton was mentioned on the show in April 2011.
Philip retired from Royal duties in 2017, and later passed away on 9th April 2021 at the age of 99. The episode to be broadcast that day was delayed in order to cover reports over his passing.
