The true culprit was Todd Grimshaw who was being threatened for money by troubled teenager Will whose services he had used at the start of the year to split up his ex Billy Mayhew from Paul in order that the two of them could take up again where they had previously left off. Will was demanding £5,000 from Todd otherwise he would reveal all to Billy and, other avenues being exhausted, he was left with the only option of stealing the pump which had been purchased using Billy's church funds for a charitable halfway house and selling it on to raise the cash. Paul was employed at the yard, but had not been paid by Ed due to a cash flow problem and his name was given to PC Craig Tinker when Ed was questioned about possible suspects.
Arrested, and having spent a night in the cells of Weatherfield Police Station, the suspicious and cynical officer questioned Paul about his relationship with Ed and his whereabouts at the time of the theft which had been between 1.30pm and 2.00pm the previous day. Paul had no alibi, having been depressed and drinking on the Red Rec by himself during the period in question. However, with no real evidence linking Paul to the theft, he was released without charge.
