The Plain Clothes Policeman arrested Bernie Winter for handling stolen goods in November 2023. Bernie had discovered that MND sufferer Shelly Rossington had been buying laptops on credit and then selling them on to pay for her care fees, knowing full well that after her death the creditors would find nothing in her estate to recoup their losses. With her own son Paul Foreman also diagnosed with the condition, Bernie saw this as a useful way to pay for his own care and began to handle the stolen goods for Shelly. She sold to them through Big Garth, the market trader, unaware that the police were onto them and from their car photographed an exchange of £500 in cash at the Weatherfield Precinct. Later, as Bernie exited the tram station, the policeman and his colleague approached Bernie and arrested her on the spot, reading her her rights.
Bernie's solicitor Joel Deering recommended that she plead guilty as the evidence against her was damning. She did so and received a three month sentence.
