Philip Stone (born 14th April 1924 in Kirkstall, Leeds; died 15th June 2003 in Ealing, London) appeared on Coronation Street in two roles: firstly as police officer Peter Derwent in June 1961; and he returned to the programme making intermittent appearances between September of the same year and September 1965 as detective sergeant Harry Sowman.

The son of a schoolmaster and the youngest of four children, he began working life for an engineering company and went on to serve in the RAF during World War II.

His first London stage appearance was in a revival of A Sleeping Clergyman in 1947 as an elderly waiter. He contracted tuberculosis later that year and was forced out of the profession for several years as he underwent treatment, but went on to appear in productions of An Inspector Calls, John Gabriel Borkman, Troilus and Cressida, Tamburlaine, The Guardsman, House Guest, The Royal Baccarat Scandal and Faith, Hope and Charity.

He started his television career during 1960 in the BBC mini series An Age of Kings. Other credits include roles in The Avengers, Compact, Z Cars, Badger's Bend, No Hiding Place, The Rat Catchers, Spearhead, Lace, Charters & Caldicott, Jenny's War, Chancer, The Ruth Rendell Mysteries and A Certain Justice.

On the bigger screen, his film roles include Never Mention Murder, Thunderball, Life at the Top, Where Eagles Dare, Carry on Loving, Voyage of the Damned, Flash Gordon and Four Weddings and a Funeral. He was the only actor to ever appear in three successive Stanley Kubrick films, namely A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and The Shining.
