Pedro Diaz was a young Spanish man who worked in a nightclub and who had a brief romance with Mavis Riley when she was on holiday in Majorca in October 1974 with a party of seven other women from Coronation Street after Bet Lynch won the trip in the Weatherfield Gazette 's "Find the Football" competition.
The two met on a beach after Mavis had been sunbathing with Rita Littlewood who had gone off swimming with one of the local men. Rita returned to the hotel and expressed her concern to the other women that Mavis had gone missing and it was Deirdre Hunt who spotted the two together below as Pedro picked a nearby bloom to pass to Mavis.
That night, Mavis and Pedro went off on their own, walking to Magaluf and drinking fundador brandy together, worrying Rita when they returned so late, she'd fallen asleep. That night, she went with Pedro to the club he worked at, enjoying helping him as he fixed the electrics, and they shared a kiss. With two days left before the holiday ended, the other women went to Pedro's club where they were both amused and not a little jealous at the way in which Pedro looked at Mavis and danced with her.
As the holiday came to an end, Pedro and Mavis said their goodbyes. He promised to write to her and asked her to return, leaving her to explain that she couldn't afford the cost of the trip. Pedro gave her one last kiss and the two never saw each other again.
