Paul Shane (born "George Frederick Speight" on 19th June 1940 in Rotherham, died 16th May 2013 also in Rotherham) appeared on Coronation Street in two roles: firstly in January 1977 as DJ Dave-the-Rave, hired for a dance at the community centre; and he returned to the programme in May 1979 as Frank Roper, GPO supervisor and boss of Alf Roberts.
Employed as a miner after leaving school, he was pensioned off in 1967 following an accident and became a professional entertainer two years later. Having worked part-time in pubs and clubs across South Yorkshire, he had a decade of experience already under his belt.
Best known for his role as holiday camp entertainer Ted Bovis in the BAFTA-winning 1980s sitcom Hi-de-Hi!, his other television credits included four series as devious butler Alf Stokes in You Rang, M'Lord? (1988-1993), two series as cuckolded railway porter Jack Skinner in Oh, Doctor Beeching! (1995-1997) and his own sitcom Very Big Very Soon (1991). He also made guest appearances in Muck and Brass, Holby City, Emmerdale and A Touch of Frost.
On stage, he appeared in productions of Dick Whittington, Run for Your Wife, Hi-de-Hi, Aladdin and Fur Coat and No Knickers.
He was the special guest on the edition of This Is Your Life, transmitted on 16th December 1981.
