Mrs Sugden was an elderly customer of Stan Ogden on his milk round. In 1965, the lonely widow took a shine to the milkman and invited him inside for a cooked breakfast, appreciating the company. This soon became a daily ritual for the pair.

Fearing Hilda's reaction, Stan had not told his wife about Mrs Sugden however he did such a typically bad job of making up cover stories that Hilda began to suspect he had a bit on the side. One such story was concocted when Mrs Sugden knitted Stan a pullover which he then gave to Albert Tatlock, and told Hilda that someone left it on his milk float. Eventually Hilda followed his float one morning, surprising Stan when he answered Mrs Sugden's door. The misunderstanding was cleared up when Stan introduced Hilda to "Mrs S", a woman old enough to be Stan's mother. Having heard all about Hilda from her husband, Mrs Sugden got her to stay for a cuppa and gave her the full story.

Her faith in Stan restored, Hilda nevertheless laid on a big dinner for him that evening to show that he didn't have to go elsewhere to be fed.
