Mrs Arnthorpe was a customer in the Corner Shop for a loaf and a packet of peas.
A few days later, Ernie Bishop organised a showing of old silent films at the Community Centre for the Darby and Joan club and Ena Sharples played the piano to accompany the films. During an enforced break when a film snapped in the projector Mrs Arnthorpe and her husband queued for buns at the refreshment counter and admitted to Ernie and Emily that although they were quite enjoying the occasion, they wouldn’t want the old days back and preferred the present day. In the event, it was Ken Barlow and the Bishops who enjoyed the films the most.
