When Curly Watts made the decision to stand against Audrey Roberts in the upcoming council election, he enlisted the help of Emily Bishop with his campaign and the pair began (disastrously) canvassing for votes through the streets of Weatherfield in May 2001.

They approached the front door of Mr Boyle and rang the bell - only to discover that the doorbell had stuck and were soon confronted by the irate man, who claimed they had broken the device - which had cost him £40. As he threatened Curly and told him that he would be paying for it, Emily tried her best to diffuse the situation and eventually managed to silence the bell. By this point however, Mr Boyle was still oblivious as to why they'd turned up on his doorstep in the first place!
