Miss Cassidy represented Steve McDonald when he appeared at the City Magistrates Court in January 1992 on a charge of handling stolen goods. He had sold a radio to Derek Wilton which had been taken from Alf Roberts' car by Carl Redfern, a friend of Steve's and his gang. When Alf recognised the radio and proved to Derek's satisfaction that it was his, Audrey Roberts called in the police. Steve was the only one to face the court as the police dropped the case against Redfern due to "inconsistencies".

Miss Cassidy took the magistrates through several mitigating circumstances: Steve's youth, having just reached the age of 17 at the time of the offence; the suffering caused to his parents by the matter, with them just having suffered a tragic loss by the death of baby Katie McDonald; and, Steve's excellent record to date with his diligent work at his father's bike shop. The magistrates fined him £100, to be paid back at £5 per week. Leaving the court, the family thanked Miss Cassidy for her services but Jim was furious to discover from her that the case against the rest of the gang had been dropped because of some irregularities in the way that the case had been handled.
