Mike Maddocks was the steward of the British Legion pub. In March 1992, he took on Liz McDonald as a barmaid at the establishment after Alec Gilroy replaced her with Raquel Wolstenhulme at the Rovers Return.
Showing the new recruit where everything was behind the bar, Mike put Liz at ease with his jovial manner, commenting sardonically that the punters would be glad to see her face as they'd had to put up with him for the past few weeks. Having met Liz's previous employer, Mike asserted that, while the Legion wasn't the most hi-tech pub, unlike Alec they did at least provide service with a smile. Liz broadly agreed with him, but added that Alec would be as charming as they come if you run a big car and say "one for yourself, landlord".
Having hired Liz, Mike gained a new best customer in the form of her husband Jim. A week after Liz joined them, Mike was chatting to Jim at the bar regarding the new Food Safety Act, for which Liz had to go on a hygiene course. Mike's complaints about the expense of making sure that their kitchen met the new requirements gave the Irishman an idea on how to get his own back on Alec for humiliating Liz.
