Michael Wall was Jim McDonald's occupational therapist who helped him recuperate and fend for himself after the building site accident left him in a wheelchair. Although Jim was initially against the idea of having someone help him recover, he soon warmed up to Michael. As a result, Jim made good progress in relearning how to walk and also considered Michael to be a friend.
However Michael found himself attracted to Jim's ex-wife Liz and the feeling was mutual. Although they tried to ignore it, the two couldn't deny their feelings for each other and began an affair at the same time Jim decided to try and win her back. The two ended up having sex in the front room, only for Jim to enter the room and catch them seconds after they'd done the dirty deed much to his fury. Michael decided to apply for a job in Milton Keynes and, when he got it, invited Liz to join him. Deciding she didn't want to be with Jim anymore regardless of his physical condition, Liz left with him. Soon afterwards, the two got engaged.
Liz returned to Weatherfield almost two years later after Jim was charged with manslaughter, and it became apparent that she was delaying returning to Milton Keynes as their relationship was in trouble; he wanted to have a baby with her while she wasn't interested in having another child. Michael eventually followed her and demanded she return with him, telling her that Jim wasn't her problem anymore. Liz realised that her place was in Weatherfield and that her relationship with Michael had run its course. She ended the engagement and he returned to Milton Keynes alone.
