Michael Ashley Ball OBE (born 27th June 1962 in Bromsgrove) appeared on Coronation Street in May 1985 as tennis coach, Malcolm Nuttall.
His family moved to Dartmoor in Devon when Michael was three years old, and by the age of eleven, he was a pupil at the independent boarding school, Plymouth College. Having joined a youth theatre in his teens, he went onto study drama at the Guildford School of Acting.
A singer, actor, television and radio presenter, Michael appears regularly in musicals, most notably Aspects of Love (his recording of the opening song Love Changes Everything reached number two in the charts) and more recently, Hairspray (he won the Olivier award for best actor in a musical playing Edna Turnblad).
Ball represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1992 with the song One Step Out of Time, finishing as runner-up and in 2020, he and Captain Tom Moore entered the UK charts at No.1 with a cover of You'll Never Walk Alone as a fundraiser for the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was awarded the OBE in the 2015 Birthday Honours for services to musical theatre.
