Michael David Apted CMG (10th February 1941 - 7th January 2021) was an award-winning film and television director. He directed 24 episodes of Coronation Street from June 1966 to July 1967 after which he went on to great acclaim for helping create and perpetuate the 7 Up series of documentaries. Michael subsequently directed such high profile films as Gorillas In The Mist, Extreme Measures, The World Is Not Enough and Enigma. He was a former director of the Directors Guild of America and was one of the governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, best known for their annual "Oscar" awards.
He wrote that directing Coronation Street could be a strain, and remembered trying to keep Violet Carson and Patricia Phoenix from "coming to blows" in the rehearsal room.
