Melanie Brown was born on 29th May 1975 in Leeds. She was uncredited for playing the role of Bettabuy worker Amy Nelson in the character's final appearance in Episode 3609 (20th October 1993). Originally, the role had been played by Louise Duprey, but Louise had found the pressures of fame too demanding and soon after the recording of Episode 3601 (1st October 1993) she suffered a nervous breakdown.

After Coronation Street, Melanie went on to join and gain international fame as a member of The Spice Girls. After the Spice Girls, she had a brief solo career and has also been a judge on the X Factor.

Melanie became a patron of Women's Aid in 2018. The charity worked closely with the show during the coercive control storyline between Geoff and Yasmeen Metcalfe, and Melanie was personally consulted in regards to her own alleged history of abuse.
