Meg Johnson

Margaret Mary "Meg" Johnson (born 30th September 1936; died 1st July 2023) played two minor characters on Coronation Street before securing the regular role of Fred Gee's short-term wife Eunice Gee in 1981. She made subsequent returns to the role of Eunice in 1982 and 1999.

With a career spanning six decades, Meg Johnson carved a name for herself in television and theatre. Her first television role was in 1961 for a series called Family Solicitor, subsequent roles include The Referees, Here's Harry, Yanks Go Home, The Good Companions, Empire Road, Country Matters and Taggart. On stage she appeared in productions of Follies and Chicago.

Ten months after her final appearance as Eunice on Coronation Street in 1999, Johnson began appearing in the regular role of Brigid McKenna in rival soap Brookside. In 2003, Johnson made the switch to Emmerdale playing the role of Pearl Ladderbanks until 2020 when she was forced off-screen in order to shield due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Johnson never returned to the role and died in July 2023 with her family announcing that she "had dementia for the last few years, but battled on personally and professionally regardless". Her husband was fellow actor and ITV Granada presenter Charles Foster, who also died in 2023.
