Maud was a pensioner friend of Minnie Caldwell's who drank with her in the snug of the Rovers Return Inn when Ena Sharples was away on holiday in Bridlington and Martha Longhurst was laid up with a bad back. There, she showed Minnie an eye exercise regime to keep her vision sharp. Minnie went to get her round at the bar where she went into a tizzy when she caught sight of Michael Courtenay across the room, with both her and Maud finding the pensioner desirable in their eyes. They invited him to join them in the snug, though both were afraid of what Ena would say if she were there.

Maud showed Michael her exercises which involved rolling her eyes regularly but their enjoyment of his company was brought to an abrupt end when Ena entered, having returned slightly earlier than expected. She immediately tore into Maud for her eye exercises, saying she might give people the wrong impression and end up being taken away in "the yellow van"! Ena's abrupt comments brought on Maud's palpitations and she made a hasty retreat, ready for an instant intake of aspirin, but not before telling Minnie how sorry she felt for her being stuck with Ena.

Two nights' later, Maud went with Minnie to attend the first formal meeting of the newly-established Over 60's Club.

Maud's second appearance was uncredited. The part was the second of Doris Hare's three roles in the programme. She returned in 1968 for the part of Alice Pickins, Albert Tatlock's fiancée.
