Matthew Robinson (born 27th July 1944) was educated at King's College Cambridge and directed Coronation Street early in his career with 24 episodes to his credit and also wrote many instalments of Crossroads. Other directing assignments included Emmerdale Farm, Crown Court, Howards Way and Doctor Who.

He was the director on the first two episodes of EastEnders (in addition to many of other early episodes) and helped to cast many of the original characters. From 1989 to 1997 he set up and worked as executive producer, producer and director on Byker Grove (created by Adele Rose and Andrea Wonfor) and, as with EastEnders, Robinson helped oversee initial production and had casting input.

From 1998 until 2000, Robinson returned to EastEnders as executive producer and from then until 2003, he worked in Cardiff as Head of Drama for BBC Wales.

From 2003 to 2006, Robinson moved to Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, to produce a 100-episode TV drama series - Taste of Life - for the BBC World Service Trust financed by the British Government through DFID. Its main theme was HIV prevention, but it also encouraged practices to improve mother and child health. In 2006, he formed an independent Cambodian film and TV production company, Khmer Mekong Films (KMF), and he been running it ever since. KMF has produced many TV shows for Cambodian TV, including dramas, documentaries and educational spots. It has also produced six feature films for the Cambodian cinema circuit: Staying Single When (2006), Vanished (2008), Palace of Dreams (2009), Day in the Country (2014), Price of Love (2015) and King Selfie (2017).
