Matt was a sports agent who had on his books, among others, Weatherfield County FC's star striker Tommy Orpington. In June 2021, Tommy hosted a dinner with Matt at the Chariot Square Hotel where he introduced him to a rising talent who was making a great name for himself in the club's youth academy, Corey Brent. What Matt wasn't told was that Corey had a serious criminal charge hanging over him of leading a gang who had the month before assaulted goth Nina Lucas and her boyfriend Seb Franklin, killing the latter as a result.
Corey was on bail pending a trial, and by coincidence and his misfortune, a drunken Nina was also in the bar of the hotel when Corey arrived for the meeting, smugly carrying his "best new talent" of the year award and taking in the praise that Tommy heaped on him as he made the introductions. She silently approached the three men and Tommy mistook her for a fan who wanted a selfie and then offered to do the same with her and new star Corey, admitting that she might not know who he was now, but she would do in the future. She angrily told the two men what he had done to her, adding for good measure that Corey had good, strong feet which had kicked the life out of her boyfriend. Matt had had enough, and insisted the three men went through for dinner, though he was not best pleased to have been introduced to such a public liability as Corey, nor with Tommy for speaking up for the lad when he denied that he had been involved in anything criminal.
