Elsie Tanner's youngest grandson, who failed to find a job after leaving school, and after a row with his father, left Birmingham and came to stay with her at No11 (making Elsie feel about a hundred !). Good with his hands, Martin got a job as an apprentice to Len Fairclough. He fell in love with machinist Karen Oldfield. When they hit a rocky patch, Martin bought an engagement ring thinking marriage would solve their problems - but it only scared away Karen. Heartbroken, Martin returned to his father in Birmingham.
Strangely enough, back in the 1960s, there was never a mention of a second grandson to Elsie Tanner. Ivan and Linda had been appearing in the series from 1960-1968, and everytine they returned with son Paul, there was no other child there.
