Mark Casey was the son of Tom Casey, who owned the Canal Garage from 1989 to 1990. Mark then took over as manager and in 1991 he sacked Kevin Webster, whereupon the hapless mechanic ran the garage into the ground.

Biography

Mark Casey was born on 15th October 1969, the son of Tom and Jean Casey. A businessman and garage owner, Tom added the Canal Garage to his empire in March 1989 and put Mark to work there, with Kevin Webster as manager.

Mark brought to his work a carefree attitude, and occasionally himself. After his first day on the job, Mark turned up at Shirley Armitage's party at the shop flat to show off his girlfriend Sharon Priestly. Working for his own dad, Mark thought he had it easy but Kevin was under orders from Tom to treat Mark like any other employee and shocked Mark by sacking him for lateness. Kevin reinstated him when he missed having him around and they eventually became friends.

In June, Mark shared with Kevin his hobby of banger racing. They bought an old Escort, did it up at the garage and had a race-off to decide who would get to drive it at the racetrack, but Sally wanted in on the action too and took driving lessons so she could participate. Kevin and Mark tried to stop her muscling in on their territory by not telling her there was a woman's race but she found out anyway and made Mark practice with her at the track. During the lesson, Mark stepped out of the car to chat a girl up and Sally drove off, whereupon a faulty differential caused the car to go out of control and crash. Sally escaped with a broken ankle but it marked the end of Mark and Kevin's banger racing craze.

Mark was friends with Kevin Webster

In May 1990, Mark started chasing Flick Khan. They went on a few dates together but Flick wasn't all that keen; when Mark gave her a gold necklace - which he failed to tell her he'd found on the garage floor, dropped by a customer - she became embarrassed by his attentions and gave the necklace to a charity shop. When Kevin found out, he made Mark buy the necklace back and return it to the customer.

Mark celebrated his 21st birthday later that year with a big party organised by his parents. Mark made a play for Jenny Bradley but she wasn't interested - until Tom and Jean announced that his present was the garage. Mark was glad to be the boss but it was a blow to Kevin and the pair argued when Mark took charge of the garage, leading to Mark sacking Kevin. But Mark didn't know how to run a garage and he gave Kevin his job back right away.

At the same time, Mark was dating Jenny Bradley and considered asking her to marry him. He wanted to live with her and planned to oust Angie Freeman from No.7. They split when Jenny left him for Robert Weston, a married man.

In January 1991, Mark found out Kevin had been doing foreigners for extra cash. When Kevin crashed a customer's car while moonlighting and asked Mark to put it on the garage's insurance, Mark refused and fired him. By the end of the year, the garage had gone bust. Mark offered to sell Kevin cheap equipment but Kevin waited until the equipment was auctioned and got it at rock bottom prices for MVB Motors. Mark went to Sally to get her to lean on Kevin to give him a job, but the Websters wanted nothing to do with him.

Other information

  • Mark considered himself an authority on women and usually went for dumb blonde types. His girlfriends included Sharon Priestly, Stephanie Smith, Flick Khan and Jenny Bradley. Tina Fowler asked him out but he thought she was too old for him.
  • Mark played on the Rovers football in a match against the building site workers in November 1989. The Rovers won.

Quotes

"Awrite" (First line, to Kevin Webster)
"'Ere you are, mate, I'll give you a game." (Final line, to Martin Platt at the Rovers dartboard).
