Maison Valerie was the high-sounding name of a hairdressing business that Valerie Tatlock ran in Weatherfield in 1961.
She had borrowed half the money to set it up from her father and it prospered to the point where she had been able to get the outside painted in dove grey and hire an assistant, Pamela Marriott. Her plans seem scuppered though when her railway-working father had been appointed in the role of station master in Glasgow and her parents made plans to move north of the border.
With no home to live in now, she called on her uncle Albert Tatlock to see if he would consider letting her live with him. As a long-term favourite of his, he was delighted with the request and readily agreed. In the event, Val did make the move to Glasgow after a few months leaving the salon in Pamela's hands. After she returned and married Ken Barlow in August 1962, she allowed Pamela to buy her out of the salon and started a new venture in the front room of 9 Coronation Street under the new name of "Valerie's".
