Maggie Monks was a shoplifter who was detained at a police station where she met Annie Walker who, accidentally, had broken a shop window after an altercation with George Naylor and Lenny Johnson, two trouble-causing supporters of rivals of Manchester City, after Annie had attended a match at Maine Road in an effort to investigate the phenomena of football hooliganism for herself. Annie was mortified to find herself on the bench next to the trampish Maggie who told her the best way to get away with something was to make up that you had a bad memory and couldn't remember what had happened.
