Luke Ashton was Charlie Ramsden's half-brother, who was also a pupil in her class at Weatherfield Comprehensive.
Luke had no respect for his teacher, writing "Mrs Ramsden is an alky" on her whiteboard and even graffiting her front door, allowing Todd Grimshaw to take the blame. Todd's girlfriend Candice Stowe and her friend Sarah Platt confronted him and eventually he owned up. In response, headteacher Hilary Johnson set up a meeting with herself, Charlie, Luke and his mother Pam Hargreaves. Charlie was stunned to come face-to-face with her biological mother whom she had only recently attempted to reconnect with, realising that Luke was her half-brother.
Luke was initially hostile, until Charlie decided to invite him into her house for a drink and a chat, and the two developed an understanding. Charlie decided to play Cupid and set Luke up with Sarah by deliberately putting them both in detention at the same time. The ploy worked as the two became an item, but when Luke found out from Charlie's husband Matt it was her interfering that led to them getting together he was furious and the sibling relationship soured again.
On Christmas Day, Luke saw Todd Grimshaw trying to kiss Sarah. He was enraged and tried to fight Todd. Although Sarah had pulled away, the couple had an argument over text message which ended in Luke dumping her.
Although they later got back together, by March 2002 Todd and Candice had broken up and, increasingly with her eye on him, Sarah dumped Luke for good.
