The Lorry Driver delivered a load of boxes to the corner shop in July 1965. At the time sporting a bandaged thumb, the driver was unable to carry the boxes through to the store, and so Dennis Tanner, on his first day working at the shop, was forced to complete the task. This conveniently left the workman free to read the newspaper, flirt with shop assistant Irma Ogden, and even drink a cup of coffee given to him by Sandra Petty with his bad hand. While Sandra was full of sympathy for the lad's condition, Irma smelled a rat, joking that the bandage was to keep him from soiling his hands while he was swinging the lead. She also noted that, in the 12 months he'd been coming to the shop, the driver always had an excuse not to do the heavy lifting.
